FLIP Week 1: Types of Infographic & Online Tools
Presentation slides

Group Task
In your group, find out what are the different types of infographic + the kind of information they’re applicable for + an example for each identified type

Exercise 1: Quantify & Visualize Data
Quantify (count) your chosen items and arrange the objects into a
presentable layout or chart. Take a picture and submit!

Requirements:
Information must be presented as is. You are required to arrange the objects  with relevant indicators written out with pens to help you visualize the quantity and data. Take a picture of the final assembly and upload into your Google Drive folder.

Fig 1: Mini LEGOS as materials, week 1 (8/2/2024)

For this layout chart exercise, i chose mini LEGOS for the material. There wasn't any multi choice of colours so i had to make do with the monochrome colours instead.

Fig 1.2: Final infographic chart, week 1 (9/2/2024)

This task was challenging for me since it is small and delicate as well as not much colour choice. It was quite hard on laying out the perfect design. However, i kept it simple and i aim to arrange it accordingly and present the data and information of what i had visualise.

Individual task 1: Re-designing an infographic poster

We were instructed to re-design one poorly constructed infographic poster through our own experimentation using a free online infographic tool. We are then required to give our own personal rating and review of the online tool used - in terms of difficulty and intuitiveness, usefulness and choices of design templates.

-Difficulty, intuitiveness
-Usefulness
-Design templates, choices

I have decided to choose a poster on how to make noodles. I chose this particular poorly instructed infographic design because it was lacking texts and a poor choice of visual elements.

Fig 1.3: poorly designed infographic poster, Week 1 (7/2/2024)

     WHAT NEEDS TO BE FIX:
  • Poor choice of visual elements.
  • Does not contain an adequate information and instructions.
  • Unnecessary information added.
  • Poor colour choice for the fonts.

I started of by keeping it simple on the big visual elements of a noodle with chopsticks to show it is about noodles. Besides that, the colour choice i have chosen was cream, black, yellow and red. The colour was inspired in some of the Chinese instant noodle packets out there.

For the font i have kept it simple and readable for the instructions. I added some visual elements according to the individual steps needed to make the noodles for a more understanding visual.

FLIP Week 2: Brief - Saul Wurman’s LATCH theory -
Presentation slides

Group Task

In your group, Do a research on who is Saul Wurman and his publications, methods. Explain the topic on the L.A.T.C.H theory.

Flip 2 - LATCH by Group 4.

Exercise 2: L.A.T.C.H

What is L.A.T.C.H ?

The premise of LATCH is that that nearly all organisational schemes for data can be reduced to five basic dimensions: Location, Alphabet, Time, Category and Hierarchy.

L - Location, Compare information coming from various sources.

A - Alphabet, Used for very large bodies of information. Not always the best organisation method – forced organisation rather than natural.

T - Time,Used for events that occur over a fixed duration. Easy to understand, easy to draw comparisons and conclusions.

C - Category, Well reinforced by colour & placement. Grouped by similar importance – a value judgment.

H - Hierarchy, Assign value or weight to the information; usually on a scale.

Individual task 2: L.A.T.C.H Visual infographic poster

Organize a group of information into a visual poster that combined and utilizes the LATCH principles (min. 4)

These are a few of suggested compiled data you can use or, you can pick any topic you want:

Pokedex: https://pokemondb.net/pokedex/
FFXIV Bestiary: https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Category:Bestiary
Dinosaur: https://www.britannica.com/animal/dinosaur

Requirements:

Size resolution: 1240 × 1750 pixels or 2048 × 2048 pixels

Use a digital photo editing / illustration software available to assemble the pokemons into a LATCH infographic poster. You can re-use back the images of the monsters, but do create the rest of your own visuals to complete the poster.

Fig1.9:Sketch idea 3

After sketching a few ideas, i wanted to proceed with the first idea which is a Mapping poster design. But i felt like it was a little common as the seniors has done similar Mapping design for this task. However, i still proceed to illustrate it to see if i would like it or not in the end.

FIRST ATTEMPT

Fig 2.3: First idea progress

Even though i like how it turned out, I still feel like it was too common and after i have consulted and showed my sketch to sir, i had a positive feedback to proceed with the second sketch that was clear and different from other designs that was shown.

Finally i have chosen to proceed with the second sketch idea, which is a Time line concept. This shows a Pokemon starter which has a starter pokemon characters during the first game.
