PROJECT 1: Proposal & Preliminary research

PROPOSAL:
The theme that was given is “Cultural Sensitivity in Design”.

In this assignment, we're tasked with exploring a cultural phenomenon or subculture that is considered sensitive. Our goal is to study and interpret this culture through a specific theme, presenting it in a way that raises awareness among viewers without altering factual information.

We'll generate 2 preliminary design ideas to visually express our interpretation of the culture. Each idea will be accompanied by detailed sketches and a rationale explaining how the design reflects our understanding and interpretation of the cultural phenomenon. Through this process, we aim to shed light on the nuances and significance of the chosen culture while respecting its sensitivity and presenting it in a thought-provoking manner.

Fig. 1.2: Idea Proposal - PDF, Week 1

After consulting with Ms. Anis and receiving feedback, our group decided to research a 'Surprise Glam Box.' Inspired by this concept, my group mate and I proposed creating a 'Cosmetic Box' with a Geisha Glam theme.Everyone did their prototype ideation sketches and proposed the function of each prototypes.

 PRELIMINARY RESEARCH:

Geisha Glam: Surprise Box seems to be a product or service related to geisha culture and glamor. However, without more specific information, it's challenging to provide detailed research. Here's a preliminary overview of what "Geisha Glam: Surprise Box" could entail:

1. Geisha Culture
Geishas are traditional Japanese entertainers who are skilled in various arts such as music, dance, and conversation. They are known for their distinctive makeup, elaborate hairstyles, and elegant attire.

2. Glamour and Beauty
"Geisha Glam" likely suggests a focus on beauty, elegance, and sophistication. This could involve makeup products, skincare items, hair accessories, or fashion pieces inspired by geisha aesthetics.

3. Surprise Box Concept
A "Surprise Box" typically refers to a subscription service where customers receive a curated selection of products on a regular basis. The contents of each box are a surprise, adding an element of excitement and anticipation for subscribers.

4. Potential Contents
The "Geisha Glam: Surprise Box" may include a variety of items such as traditional Japanese beauty products like skincare infused with ingredients like green tea or rice bran, makeup items for achieving the geisha's signature look, accessories like ornate hairpins or fans, or even cultural items like tea sets or prints featuring traditional Japanese artwork.

5. Cultural Sensitivity
Given the cultural significance of geishas and Japanese traditions, it's crucial for the brand to approach its products and marketing with sensitivity and respect, avoiding cultural appropriation or stereotypes.
