 Week 3

On week 3 due to Chinese New Year's holiday break, there were no classes.  We were advised to watch the pre-recorded lecture 6 - Self Portrait videos and start our progress for Project 1 before the due date on 3rd February 2023.

In lecture 6,Ms Jinchi Yip introduces self-portrait in the videoown visualization would be a representation of oneself that is imagined and created based on the artist's own perceptions, thoughts, and emotions. This type of self-portrait can reflect the artist's inner self, personality, and experiences. It can be created through a variety of mediums such as drawing, painting, photography, or digital art.

 Visual Research

What is Self-Portrait? a self-portrait is a representation of oneself, typically a painting, drawing, photograph, or sculpture, made by the artist themselves. The purpose of a self-portrait is often to reflect on one's own identity, appearance, and emotions, and to communicate them to the viewer. Self-portraits can also be used as a form of self-expression and experimentation with different styles and techniques.

1. Self-Portraits in minimalist Photography

Minimalist photography self-portraits are portraits that emphasize simplicity and minimalism in their composition and visual elements. These self-portraits often feature the subject in a plain, uncluttered setting, with minimal props or background elements. The focus is usually on the subject's face and body, which are captured in a way that highlights their unique features, expressions, and emotions. Minimalist photography self-portraits aim to capture the essence of the subject in a clean and straightforward manner, emphasizing the subject's individuality and emotional state.

2. Glitch in Self-Portraits

Glitch photography self-portraits refer to self-portraits that incorporate elements of digital glitch or distortion in their composition and visual elements. This type of photography often features the subject with intentionally distorted, fragmented, or corrupted images, colors, and shapes. The result is an image that appears to be disrupted or malfunctioning, creating an eerie and surreal effect. Glitch photography self-portraits are often used to explore themes of identity, technology, and the effects of digital media on our lives.

3. Sculptures in Self-Portraits

A sculpture self-portrait is a three-dimensional representation of oneself created through sculpting techniques such as modeling, carving, or casting. Sculpture self-portraits can be made from a variety of materials including stone, metal, wood, or clay. They often reflect the physical features, emotions, and personality of the subject, and can serve as a powerful representation of the self. Sculpture self-portraits can be realistic, abstract, or somewhere in between, and can provide a unique and captivating insight into the artist's self-image and self-expression.

4. Surrealism in Self-Portraits

A surrealist self-portrait is a representation of oneself that incorporates elements of the surrealist art movement, characterized by dream-like and irrational elements. These self-portraits often feature the subject in fantastical, imaginary, or dream-like settings, with elements that blur the lines between reality and the subconscious. Surrealist self-portraits can also incorporate elements of distortion, fragmentation, and symbolism to create a unique and otherworldly image of the self. Through this style of self-portraiture, the artist can explore the inner self, emotions, and unconscious mind in a way that is imaginative, playful, and thought-provoking.

 Design Process & Idea Exploration

I've looked through the website while finding some materials for my visual research and I came across the traditional or so called original style of Self-portrait photograph that could help me to create a self-portrait digitally too.

As i am scrolling through my gallery which I have a few photographs of myself in a portrait mode using an iPhone 11 camera. I then started to finalize and chose the best portrait picture of myself as my reference.

Next I have found some inspirations from Pinterest for the idea of surrealism self-portraits. Here are some of the inspirations that I got:

For my final outcome work I have chosen surrealism in Self-Portraits. Then, I started to find few elements and sources to create my own style of digital drawing final work. I started off by searching few pictures that represent myself and what I feel that would suit my portrait reference picture that i have chosen. Here are the pictures I found as a reference: Clouds, Smoke, Water ripples. Then I find the followings pics from Pinterest as my materials.

I used Procreate app on my iPad to create my surrealistic digital artwork. I have learned these skills from my previous digital drawing work.

And here are some progresses and idea exploration I have made before the final outcome.

I have decided to use the colors above for my final outcome.

 fig 4.4: Self -Portrait progress

I used the tools that is already in the procreate app and there were also layers for myself portraits, to make it more organize when I want to add different elements. Then, I added a mixed colored background and gaussian blurred it as my background. A few of the materials I found on Pinterest, I used it as reference so that i can have my own twist on it and idea of what I can create.

Then, i added details to my hair with stroke of highlights and original colors of my hair. From the original reference photo, there were a glow of pinkish light shining through my right side of my face, so i added a airbrush effect to make look soft and subtle glow of light.

Afterwards, I added smoke effects that is coming out from my hair. I was approaching for a pulling up effect to represent myself being in my own headspace and my own fantasy world.

 Final Outcome

For my final outcome, i have decided to add the white borders like reference fig 3.3: surrealism Self -Portrait (Pinterest) to make the portrait stand out more from the background. Then i added some color balance to make the portrait pop more.

Reflection

Through this exercise, I've learn that self-portraits can be created in various mediums including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and digital art. Different styles and techniques can be used to create self-portraits, including minimalist, surrealist, glitch, and more. A self-portrait can reflect the artist's inner self, personality, and experiences, providing a unique insight into their identity and self-expression. Self-portraits can serve as a form of artistic exploration and experimentation, allowing the artist to challenge themselves and try new things. The subject of a self-portrait can be depicted in a variety of ways, from a realistic representation of their physical features to a more imaginative and surreal representation of their inner self. Overall, self-portraiture can be a powerful and personal form of art, providing an opportunity for artists to explore and express themselves in a meaningful and impactful way.
